So as I posted last week, I had some paintings in an awesome group exhibition earlier this month called Hyper Reality Dimension XX which was all about 80′s films, cartoons and videogames.

To help promote the show I created some pixel art titles that tried to recreate the vibe of a late 80′s arcade/console style title screen.

The main reason I did the teaser was because I had already spent several weeks working on an animation that I had been hoping to show at the exhibition. At the start of the project I had not used Flash for around 10 years and also had to learn how to animate sprites. I wasn’t particularly daunted by that task, I was only concerned about whether I could execute the full length animation I had storyboarded before the deadline.

When I realised I wouldn’t have time to complete the full animation I decided I could at least use the idea in it’s most basic form to promote the exhibition itself.

The full animation, which was to be titled “80′s Teenage Outburst 2 Retro: Coming of Rage” was a Street Fighter styled animation where the fighting characters were all from 80′s teen films.

As well as the titles I built a “Choose Your Fighter” screen, complete with animated sprites and pixel art portraits of each character and I thought I’d share a few of the sprites here.

As I said, I had to learn how to animate sprites as I went. There may be a much easier way of doing sprites, but I did them frame by frame, pixel by pixel in Photoshop…

Hopefully in the near future I’ll be able to go back to this concept and develop it further.

Click on the sprite to see it on it’s own, where it should load/run more smoothly.
